This week I made calls for Sen. Bill Nelson’s reelection campaign. The responses were very positive, but I suspect my list was mostly Democratic voters. The polls show this will be a very tight race, for at least three reasons:

First, Florida imports a steady stream of mostly white retirees … a demographic that trends strongly Republican.

Second, Florida has the nation’s highest rate of voter disenfranchisement: over 10% of our voting age population. Those are disproportionately people of color … a demographic that would trend strongly Democrat, if they could vote.

And third, Republicans are pouring a ton of money into Gov. Rick Scott’s U.S. Senate campaign. There are Scott ads running on cable channels pretty much round the clock.

So yeah, we’ll need to do a whole lot of GOTV to overcome those structural hurdles and reelect Sen. Nelson.
