Most of us have heard someone start this phrase and finish it with” … “but I’m a fiscal conservative.” (More)
Midday Matinee is our people watching, people doing and people being feature. Join the Woodland Creatures for an afternoon break.
At my son’s house we have what I call porch conversations. A guy made that comment the other night. For the record, it drives me nuts. It’s like too many people have bought into the myth that the Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility.
I said, “Well for sure that makes you a Democrat then.” For the record he is a Democrat. I suggested he google deficit exploders and debt exploders.
Here’s the Presidents in order of their expansion of the debt. The source is the Treasury Department.
George W. Bush 86%
George H.W. Bush 55%
Bill Clinton 37%
Barack Obama 35%
Trickle down economics clearly doesn’t work. The wealthiest get tax cuts and that’s about it.
The last years of surplus were under Bill Clinton.
The largest deficit was under Bush/Obama, $932,561 (millions) The fiscal years do not align with the Presidential terms.
Obama’s next largest was $693,824 (millions) as a result of stimulus to avoid the great recession. 10/09 to 9/10. Obama’s last year the deficit was $271,881 (millions) It is fair to say that Obama reduced the deficit from the high required to avert a depression to what looks more normal.
When Republicans like Grover Norquist say “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.” they aren’t talking about debts and deficits. After all, Dick Cheney said “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter.”
The Republican economic agenda is more tax cuts for the richest and less social safety net for everyone else. That’s it. That’s all they are for. That’s what their health care bill is. Don’t be fooled by their myths and slogans. Watch what they do and not what they say.
