Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)
Today House Republicans backed off their plan to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics, even though White House counsel-to-be Kellyanne Conway said they had a ‘mandate’ to do it, after the Narcissist-elect scolded them for doing it too sneakily and too soon. But even disgraced bribester Jack Abramoff ridiculed them and conservative think-tanker Norm Ornstein called it a “unconscionable, deplorable, underhanded move.” But Kevin Drum notes that House Republicans only agreed to wait until August to gut the OCE and Dara Lind warns that bowing to public outrage and the Narcissist-elect’s Twitter feed is a weak substitute for respecting institutional norms. Should we celebrate this victory, however weak and temporary?
