Virginia is becoming the star of its own real-life zombie movie — except it involves bees, not humans.
Authorities have confirmed the presence of a “zombie bee” parasite that threatens to destroy honeybee populations in the state, according to an Associated Press report. This parasite was first discovered in California back in 2008 and since then has spread to multiple states — and now Virginia, it appears, which would be the first southern state to record its presence, according to the report.
The parasite latches onto a bee and injects its eggs, causing the bees to act like zombies, flying at night when they ordinarily wouldn’t and dying hours later. The larvae then emerge from the bee’s corpse a few days later.
