I am very impressed with the Forest Service. They represent good government at work. (More)
Midday Matinee is our people watching, people doing and people being feature. Join the Woodland Creatures for an afternoon break.
I am a campground host at the edge of the BWCA, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota. The Forest Service started a prescribed burn which got out of control. The prescribed burn was 78 acres and the fire jumped to 1000 acres. The weather changed not according to the forecasts. You may be wondering why I think this is an example of good government.
First of all they are communicating with nearby communities with meetings, press releases and www.inciweb. I can go on line and get the latest fire updates. They tell me how many firefighters, aircraft and helicopters are deployed. Second, since my campground can occasionally smell the smoke, I get daily visits from Forest Service personnel with printed updates and maps to share with my campers. My campers are impressed as am I.
Yesterday I was struggling to put up my screen tent when two women from the Forest Service arrived. They offered to help and we got it up.
There is a community of people here who take care of each other, Writ large isn’t that what good government is?
