This week I emailed my U.S. senators and U.S. House representative, and warned them that voters will hold the Republican Party responsible if they shut down government in an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. I noted that the U.S. Constitution allows Congress to override a presidential veto with two-thirds majorities in each chamber. The U.S. Constitution does not authorize Congress to shut down the entire federal government if the president refuses to sign a bill.

The GOP don’t hold enough seats in the Senate or House to override a veto. Unless they can get enough Democrats to join them – and not enough Democrats will – Republicans must accept the president’s veto. That, not political hostage-taking, is how our constitutional system works.
