This week I received a reply from Sen. Bill Nelson to my email about the War on Drugs and the Incarceration Generation. He said he would keep my comments in mind in considering the Smarter Sentencing Act (S. 502/H.R. 920), which would reduce minimum mandatory sentences for non-violent drug offenses and allow judges to decide whether to apply mandatory sentencing to minor drug offenders with negligible criminal records. The bill would also retroactively reduce sentences for some crack cocaine offenders.

Both the Senate and House bills were referred to the respective Judiciary Committees in February. Alas, govtrak estimates only a 1-in-12 chance that these bills will be enacted. Please take a moment to write or call your senators and representatives and encourage them to support these bills.
