Today Senate leaders reached a deal on the human trafficking bill and a confirmation vote for Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch. The sticking point had been Republicans’ insistence that victim compensation funds not be used to pay for abortions, despite the fact that sex trafficking is rape. Today’s agreement pays for victims’ health care through general funds, subject to the Hyde Amendment, which pays for abortions in cases of rape or incest. Should it matter that Henry Hyde never applied his amendment to victims’ assistance funds?
