This I helped my partner handle a service issue with a business. She began by publicly criticizing them and, to our surprise, they replied almost immediately. Once they did I applied the lessons of Andrea Weckerle’s Civility in the Digital Age and last week’s Morning Feature series on public shaming by encouraging her to publicly thank them for the prompt response.
Her complaint was not political, so ordinarily I wouldn’t mention it here. But as we saw last week, the internet is a powerful tool and online disputes can quickly become destructive. We progressives should use the internet’s power wisely and my partner did so. The exchange concluded on a tone of courtesy and mutual respect, and the business is now resolving the issue.
