This week I attended my local Democratic Executive Committee meeting. After almost three years as vice chair, it was nice to sit in the back. We heard a wonderful presentation from a veteran health care administrator who lobbies both Congress and our state legislature to improve health care law. Among other proposals, her group is pushing the Florida Legislature to expand Medicaid to protect our public hospitals. The 2010 Affordable Care Act expected states to expand Medicaid to cover low-income patients, so a separate federal fund to reimburse hospitals for indigent care was not be renewed. But many Republican-dominated states refused to expand Medicaid, and now their public hospitals face a funding crunch. Maybe that will get them off the stick.
