This week I finished rereading Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century. I also wrote my state legislators to oppose several bills now being considered in the Florida Legislature, including a ‘bathroom bill’ that would ban transgendered Floridians from using public bathrooms that correspond to their gender identities. Republicans say this is to protect women, but I could not find a single documented case of a woman having been attacked by a transgendered person in a restroom. On the contrary, transgendered people live with a heightened risk of sexual assault and other violence. Yet this abusive bill passed out of committee and seems on track to become law.
