Today both ESPN Outside the Lines and the New York Times reported that University of Missouri defensive lineman and top NFL prospect Michael Sam has come out as gay. If drafted, Sam would be the NFL’s first openly-gay player. ESPN online voters think the league is ready and the NFL issued an official statement supporting Sam, but anonymous NFL executives aren’t so sure and former NFL coach Herm Edwards likened Sam’s orientation to “off the field issues.” Will homophobia make teams pass on the SEC’s 2013 Defensive Player of the Year?
