This week our county Democratic Party put the “fun” back in “fundraising.” In a series of emails, our county party treasurer detailed the costs of our upcoming direct mail fundraising drive, including postage, adding:
CARRIER PIGEON: 5 LBS OF CORN MEAL FOR THE PIGEONS: $ 2.87.
Our fundraising committee chair replied:
Would we get the corn meal at Wal-Mart? I hate Wal-Mart but it might serve them right to use their corn meal to raise money for our candidates.
I tried to be the voice of reason:
I’m concerned about the cost of erecting statues in the front lawns of each recipient, so the pigeons know where to land.
But our treasurer would not be denied:
The Department of the Interior pays for the statues, which are made for Republican politicians who have made the ultimate sacrifice of our money.

We’ll vote on it in tonight’s steering committee meeting.
