Today Queen Elizabeth II pardoned mathematician and computing pioneer Alan Turing, who was convicted of “gross indecency” and chemically castrated for having a gay relationship, despite his role in the code-breaking that helped the Allies win World War II. The Guardian quotes Turing biographer David Leavitt saying the pardon sends a clear message to Russia and India about LGBT equality, while Feministing’s Katie Halper quotes Lord Sharkey calling for pardons for all ‘convicted’ LGBTs. Will Turing’s pardon change any minds on LGBT equality?
