After misrepresenting a statement by Australian Foreign Minister Robert Carr Sunday night, today Mitt Romney left for the United Kingdom, the first stop on a six-day overseas tour that will include stops in Poland and Israel. The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Trudy Rubin wrote that Romney’s foreign affairs statements have “a Rip Van Winkle quality,” and Newsweek‘s Peter Beinhart wrote that Romney will be “traveling back in time,” seeking to refight the past while ignoring current global issues like the international financial crisis. Is Romney’s backward focus politically calculated to appease older GOP base voters, or sincere obliviousness?
