Tonight’s Campus Question
ThinkProgress reports that the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will begin an investigation of racial bias in the application of ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws, noting data showing that “while white killers of black victims comprises only 3.1% of all homicides, such cross-racial killing constitute 15.6% of justifiable homicides.” Many New York City residents are also protesting the ‘Stop and Frisk’ policy which so disproportionately targets young men of color that in 2011 police stopped more young black men (168,126) than live in the city (158,406). Is “equal protection of the laws” an impossible dream?
