The New York Times today offered a thorough and thoughtful story of people who oppose safety net programs, yet still use them. At the conservative Just One Minute, Tom Maguire disputes whether Social Security and Medicare should be called “safety net programs” or “middle class entitlements” and cites an argument by The Atlantic‘s Megan McArdle that programs for the needy discourage them from seeking higher-paying jobs. Do their criticisms disprove the thesis of the Times‘ story?
