Today we break with our usual tradition of rounding up the serious news in favor of the most serious news of all: Tracking Santa.

Since 1955, when a mistake in the phone number of a Sears Roebuck ad in Colorado Springs invited children to call Santa, and they instead reached the Operations officer at NORAD, tracking Santa has become a huge holiday event sponsored by NORAD volunteers.

You can read the history here, you can play Christmas games in the Christmas Countdown Village or you can track Santa’s journey with the aid of NORAD and, if you want 3D, with a Google Earth plug in. You can even see videos and photos of his journey.

So cut the kid in you loose, play some games, and follow Santa around the globe. His journey began hours ago near the International Dateline.

Better hurry and catch up!
