In Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate, Newt Gingrich seemed to call for amnesty for the estimated 12-million undocumented immigrants who have been living in the U.S. for decades. His GOP opponents and conservative leaders quickly pounced on Gingrich’s call for a “humane” solution on immigration. Yesterday Gingrich seemed to walk back his stance, or doubled-down, depending on the source. Does allowing “local communities” to vote on whether undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay – but remain permanently ineligible for citizenship unless they leave and reapply – seem “humane” to you?
