Colonial New Jersey governor William Franklin signed the charter for Queen’s College, now Rutgers University, today (1766). Also, the U.S. Marine Corps was founded (1775), Rufina Alfaro’s Cry of Independence began Panama’s revolt against Spanish rule (1821), Henry Morton Stanley said “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” (1871), the Wilmington Insurrection began (1898), Harry Winston donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution (1958), and Sesame Street debuted (1969). And the Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm on Lake Superior (1975).
