Facing competition from email and private delivery services, the U.S. Postal Service may not be able to pay its bills at the end of this month. On Tuesday the Postmaster General asked Congress for help, and Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) said no business could survive if Congress told them “how many retail outlets they should have and where they should be located,” as is the case with post offices. But reducing the number of post offices would cut jobs and limit service to rural communities. Can the U.S. Postal Service remain viable in the 21st Century?
