A pharmaceutical company is boosting the price of a drug that prevents premature births from $10 to $1,500 claiming that it is ‘still cheaper than the costs of the birth’. The FDA’s orphan drug laws grant companies an exclusive marketing right. Should a pharmaceutical company be allowed to raise prices to whatever the market will bear for drugs needed to treat rare conditions?
