Today’s output from Blogistan Polytechnic Institute’s state-of-the-art HEMMED (High-Energy Meta Mojo Elucidation Detector) machine is a prediction I can make with 100% certainty: regardless of the results of the election (which will start coming in about 7 hours from the time this article posts) someone, heck, maybe everyone, will claim that it is a sign that the nation is a center-right nation and that President Obama needs to move to the right.

How can I make this prediction with absolute certainty?

Because it has already started without even waiting for the election results and because it is a time-tested strategy of the GOP to move the Overton Window to the right every chance they get. Obama wins in November 2008? He will have to move right to govern successfully because he will need republican votes. Well, actually, moving right did not gain a single republican vote and the Democrats and President Obama passed some historic legislation.

Center right? Nope…nice try though!

From a Morning Feature discussion earlier this year:

[The Overton Window] theory offers six levels of public acceptance for political ideas, ranging from Unthinkable through Radical, Acceptable, Sensible, and Popular, to Policy. The premise for advocating Unthinkable or Radical policies is not to get them enacted immediately, but to make less extreme ideas seem Acceptable and Sensible by comparison, so they will become Popular and then Policy.

The national republican party is doomed in the long run. The demographics do not favor a party running on racism, anti-immigration, gay-bashing, anti-worker, anti-family and more wealth and privilege for the wealthy and privileged. Their long shot hope is to retain power long enough to tilt the playing field using the Roberts Court as their referees so that we no longer have honest elections.

I think that they will fail.

Why do I say that?

Because we are a center-left nation and the more the right-wing pundits and politicians claim the radical right as the “norm”, the more resistant people will become to that messaging. The visuals of the tea party movement are so awful that embracing it will be impossible for most people. Even the republican politicians don’t know how to talk about it without turning into a pretzel. Take this nonsensical statement from Rep. Darrell Issa (in line to run the Oversight and Government Reform Committee if the tea party GOP takes over the House):

… his job will be “getting America back to the center right where it exists.”

How can you get something back to where it exists? Sorry….I ran that through the HEMMED lab’s GIGO ports and it simply does not compute. Either as “English” (a precise human language) or “Reality” (something that has a known liberal bias).

Robert Reich has the republican response pegged:

If Republicans succeed in taking over the House and come even close to gaining a majority in the Senate, expect calls for the President to “move to the center.” These will come not only from Republicans but also from conservative Democrats, other prominent Dems who have been defeated, Fox Republican News, mainstream pundits, and White House political advisers.

In about 7 hours the election returns (and spin) will start coming in. Based on past history, the actual results of the elections will start becoming known in about 7 hours and 1 minute (some may take as long as 5,688 hours).

The “we are a center-right nation” talk has already started. Expect it to ratchet up until you can’t hear yourself think. Then stop … and think. We are not a center-right nation. We are a center-left nation and we are moving left not right.

Start your Fred Whispering for 2012 now. Don’t let Fred believe for one minute that we are a tea party nation and make sure that he knows where to find us.
