We have a mid-term election coming up in less than 5 months. Listening to the media (right, left and “mainstream”), you would think that we Progressives were in middle school instead of in the fight of our lives to retain our majorities.

Today I am turning on the highbeam of the Elucidation (“cast light on”) part of HEMMED (High-Energy Meta Mojo Elucidation Detector) to take a look at the current state of political discourse.

The key to our success in the mid-term elections is Voter Enthusiasm to both get the base out and to get the independent lean-left archetypal voter Fred to vote and vote with us. It is not going to be easy to Inspire Fred when the most important things about candidates being mentioned these days are chickens, rumors of adultery and complaints that “politicians exaggerate” (rolls eyes).

This may be “fun” and it may be “entertaining” but it is definitely distracting. The reality on the ground is that policies and progress are what will reach Fred and my concern is whether we can return to earth in time to start getting serious about this job.

A candidate’s personal life is fair game insofar as it tells us something about his or her fitness for public office. If a candidate burnishes their resume, that is not really unexpected. Lots of politicians exaggerate their attributes and minimize their limitations. (Heck, lots of non-politicians do the same thing. It is human nature.) A falsehood on a political resume can be pointed out but it should not be the focus of the campaign. By focusing on that you are giving them a free ride on the things that matter: the issues.

The good news is that we have actual policy differences to run on this year. It is not Republican-Lite or the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party. It the “Party of No” versus the “Party of Get The Job Done”. And this year the facts have a definite liberal bias.

So lets spend the next few months focusing on those differences and polishing our speech to Fred:
1. People matter more than profits.
2. The earth is our home, not our trash can.
3. We need good government for both #1 and #2.

If we don’t return to earth in time, we will have missed the opportunity to talk to Fred about what matters.

Squirrel@BPI: JanF, this HEMMED In was not funny. I thought you were the Professor of Topofclassclownistics.
JanF@HEMMED: You are right, my squirrel friend. But sometimes I have to scold my fellow progressives in order to remind them about what is important. We have to undo the Conservative Winter and we can’t do it if we are plunged back into it by the Tea Party GOP before we can get the Progressive Summer started. Will it help if I post a cute picture?
Squirrel@BPI: Yes, but please, could it be a squirrel?
JanF@HEMMED: No problem. I gotz squirrelz. 😀

Squirrel@BPI: Awwwwwww
