Today Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said the expanded background checks bill blocked by Republicans this spring might have prevented yesterday’s mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. Also, Time’s Alex Rogers reported that a year-long audit showed the Navy Yard had relaxed security over civilian contractors, to save costs. And MedStar Trauma Center chief Dr. Janis Orlowski pleaded for action to curb gun violence yesterday. While President Obama takes steps on his own, will Congress remain in thrall to the NRA?
