Midday Matinee – Beyoncé and the Illuminati

Beyoncé is certainly providing fuel for conspiracy theorists. Did she flash the well-known sign of a secret society during her super bowl halftime performance? Was Dan Brown involved? (More)

Midday Matinee is our people watching, people doing and people being feature. Join the Woodland Creatures for an afternoon break.

The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown gave us super symbologist Robert Langdon and the idea that symbols were hiding in plain sight. The popularity of those novels and the movies based on them took symbolism and conspiracy theories from the purview of survivalists and anti-government whackos and brought it to popular culture. Now reasonable people can find symbols darn near anywhere. Perhaps it is unfair of me to blame/credit Dan Brown with popularizing conspiracy theories. They were thriving long before he hit the scene.

The line between reality (facts, science, etc.) and fantasy (Paul Ryan’s budget, Mitt Romney’s pollsters, etc.) has been blurring for some time now. Maybe it’s always been blurred. Maybe Beyoncé’s half time show got more attention because the Super Bowl at halftime looked like another boring rout.

This gesture is what launched the latest conspiracy theory:

The Illuminati

Historically the name refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1, 1776. In more modern contexts the name refers to a purported conspiratorial organization which is alleged to mastermind events and control world affairs through governments and corporations to establish a New World Order.

Somehow Beyoncé’s gesture was a sign, a sign I tell you, that Beyoncé was a member of The Illuminati.

If there was a powerful group committed to establishing a ‘New World Order’ what are they doing? Where is the ‘Order’? Where is the ‘power’? A Google search resulted in over 2 million hits on “Beyoncé + Illuminati.” I can’t blame it all on the power outage during the Super Bowl because that happened after halftime. On the other hand, maybe the power outage was a demonstration of the power of the Illuminati? It fits.

I have an idea for a new conspiracy. We have hand gestures for peace, for road rage and for the sign of the cross. We don’t have a hand gesture that says “vote.” Maybe we should adopt Beyoncé’s sign as the universal gesture that reminds citizens to vote.

Just a thought.

Hey, I like that idea. 🙂 A universal gesture to remind people to vote.

As for the Illuminati, they’ve been gone a long time, except in the minds of conspiricists. I suppose every so often someone tries to resurrect them, but how far are you going to get with something that was merely intended to be a philosophical discussion group? Who has the rule book? 😉

Great thoughts, though. If there’s a New World Order, I’d like to see some evidence of it. Instead all I see is disorder. Hah!

I see disorder too but it may just be seeing to many Republicans on the news.

  • Wait… she was making hand gestures? ❓ Somehow I missed that. 😉 Don’t know what could have distracted me from that. 😳

Cute response, Norbrook. Very clever. 😆

It’s often said that “seeing is believing,” but too often it’s more a matter of “believing is seeing.” Once we believe This, it’s far too easy to find ‘evidence’ for This everywhere we look.

And if a person doesn’t know what to believe or what they saw, for sure you can find out what ‘really’ happened on the internet. Someplace on the net someone has an opinion.
