Campus Question – January 31, 2013

Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)

Today the Senate Armed Services Committee questioned Chuck Hagel. Hagel, a decorated Vietnam veteran who has taught geopolitics at Georgetown University, faces opposition from Senate Republicans including Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), who announced his opposition before Hagel’s testimony, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who said he will block Hagel unless outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta testifies on the Benghazi attack. Is enlisted combat veteran, U.S. senator, and geopolitics professor too weak a résumé for Secretary of Defense?

The Republicans are just upset that the President went and found someone competent, and gasp! a Republican!!! to appoint.

Let’s be honest: not one of the Senate Republicans who attacked Chuck Hagel today has an ounce of Hagel’s proven courage and integrity. This is about relitigating the Iraq War and the swaggering neoconservative agenda, which Hagel came to oppose and which Sen. McCain and most other Senate Republicans still support wholeheartedly.

This hearing was like the curtain falling on the neocons and the “any war is a good war” crowd of Republicans. They used their time not for intelligent discussion of defense policies and priorities but to vent their frustrations that the nation and the world are no longer enthralled by their philosophy of American military might as the answer no matter the question.

    I will not miss them.
