Campus Question – January 23, 2013

Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)

Today Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was grilled by Republicans over the September attack in Benghazi, which Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) absurdly called “the worst tragedy since 9/11.” There were several heated exchanges and, predictably, right-wing media are twisting her answers into talking points in real time. Today was the fourth round of congressional hearings about Benghazi, where four people were killed. How many hearings will Republicans hold about mass shootings in the U.S. that killed 87 people in 2012 alone?

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) began his bizarre question with “Had I been president, you would have been fired.” (Translation: “Yes, I’m running for president in 2016.”) This entire hearing was right-wing political theater.

And while you were watching the hearings, the Virginia state legislature moved along toward gerrymandering their Electoral College votes. The bill would allocate EC votes by congressional district, with two EC votes going to the candidate who won the most congressional districts. Not to the candidate who wins a statewide popular majority, but to the candidate who wins the most congressional districts. Apparently the Virginia GOP are upset because “more populous urban voters” outweigh the state’s fewer rural voters. (Translation: “White power!”)

Had that been the law in 2012, Mitt Romney would have won 9 of Virginia’s 13 EC votes … with fewer than half of the state’s voters.

  • Ummm… none? Were any of these hypothetical “mass shootings” caused by suspiciously brown, Islamic types? No? Oh, then not as bad as 9/11, so no hearings are necessary!

If they follow the 111th congress they will make lots of changes.

The 111th Congress revisited several issues previously considered in the 110th Congress. For example, Congress considered amendments to DC voting rights bills that would have further overturned DC gun laws (S. 160 and H.R. 157). In addition, Congress passed several other gunrelated provisions included in enacted legislation that address
    • carrying firearms on public lands (P.L. 111-24),
    • transporting firearms in passenger luggage on Amtrak trains (P.L. 111-117),
    • widening law enforcement off-duty concealed carry privileges (P.L. 111-272),
    • prohibiting higher health care premiums for gun owners (P.L. 111-148), and
    • prohibiting the Department of Defense (DOD) from regulating firearms privately owned but lawfully held by service members, DOD civilian personnel, and their family members off-base (P.L. 111-383).

Political theater or proud minority rule? They are a noisy bunch. If their antics don’t scare the beegeesus out of every Democrat, I will be worried for our side. Republicans still have enough power to wreak havoc. We all need to get busy and fight for the progress we have made and still need to make.
