Things We Did This Week – January 14-20, 2013

Please share your stories of offline political activism here. (More)

This week I attended my county Democratic Executive Committee meeting and gave a presentation on how to effectively discuss gun safety based on my Morning Feature series from earlier this month. I also signed up with Organizing For Action, the official grassroots activism organization of the Obama administration, and I look forward to working with them and our local Democrats to both push legislation and prepare for the 2014 midterms.

I once again emailed my congress critters. I signed up for the new Organizing for Action. I had so many “invites” to sign up I’m thinking that no one has done a merge/purge for quite some time.

Thank you for your activism, addisnana. I must have slipped through their cracks, because I got only two invitations to sign up for Organizing for Action. Now I feel unwanted…. ;-)

On Thursday I went to a phone bank for our group, South Jersey Citizens for change, calling volunteers to invite them to an Inaugural Ball at a nearby pub for Monday night. Our Team Captain told us that we would be continuing reaching out and would continue our role in getting the President’s agenda passed in legislation, and details would be forthcoming soon. The next day I got the email from Messina that OFA would change to Obama for Action. I signed that I was in, and gave a small donation of $15. In January I signed to continue giving my monthly donation, what would now be known as The Victory Fund.

On Monday I went to the Inaugural with another Core Team Member. We got to D.C. at 7:00 in the morning. We both had orange tickets that were on the Northern side of the Capital. On the programming schedule the gates were to be opened at 7:00, and as soon as we got out of the station there was already a long line to get in. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to get through security. We finally wound up standing in the overflow section behind a tree, So we had to watch the large screen to see anything. It was worth it just being there and being part of it.

The President and everyone that spoke and performed were truly Inspirational. I didn’t care nor do I think anyone that was there care if the “performances were live or taped”. His message was what was important. I loved how he said “we the People” so many times in his speech. That it was up to us to always make sure our government is working, that we have to stay informed and make sure we talk to our legislators, that we should always strive to improve and include and work for the next generations that follow.

We didn’t stay for the entire Inaugural Parade. We were very far and on a hill facing Pennsylvania Avenue, and it started really late. I did see Michelle from the car waving, and did see some of the Military bands march. Unfortunately, we left before seeing the floats and marching bands from all the states.

I only took a few pictures on my cell phone, and they didn’t come out to well.
