Campus Question – January 16, 2013

Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)

Today President Obama unveiled his comprehensive gun safety plan, including 23 Executive Orders to better implement current laws. The American Prospect‘s Paul Waldman notes, “The more difficult and consequential parts – the assault-weapons and high-capacity magazine bans, the universal background checks – will require Congress.” Will President Obama’s grassroots campaign apparatus overwhelm the NRA’s slimy attacks on the president’s children, the RNC’s “power grab” lies, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s faux-outraged call for prayer?

There’s a lot of news and not-really-news packed into today’s Question. As to the question itself, yes, if we grassroots progressive Democrats work as hard on this as we worked for the 2012 elections, then we can overwhelm the NRA, the RNC, and even Gov. Perry’s staged outrage … and pass sensible laws to help prevent massacres, enhance community safety, and make killers stop to reload.

President Obama said today that it’s up to us to provide the popular pressure to get this done. He’s right … and I’m in. How about you?

Well, I’m already getting e-mail from my Senators (both Democrats) and I’m sure I’ll be getting it pretty soon from OFA. ;-) Given that the NRA has apparently 4 million members, and OFA has over 16 million, I’d say the advantage is the President’s.

Count me as part of the grassroots army who will work to help support the President and pressure Congress to pass his proposals. I sent my emails off after the President’s press conference. I made a small contribution to the Brady Campaign earlier. I hope that Joan Walsh is correct that this may be the “Ding dong the witch is dead” moment for the NRA.

I already got an email from my Senator, Bob Menandez, to sign a petition to support the President’s proposal. I was glad to see my other Senator also signed on. I also signed a petition on the whitehouse.org site.

I already spoke to one of my Co-Chair Leaders yesterday. we are having a phone bank tonight, because they are having an inaugural party at a nearby pub and we will definitely be doing something as part of “The Action”. I will let you know, when I get more information.
