Campus Question – November 26, 2012

Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)

Having finally recognized that “Hispanics are really conservative” is a myth, without acknowledging that the Pew Hispanic Center debunked it back in April, Charles Murray today asked why Asians aren’t Republicans and concluded they must believe the “ludicrously inaccurate” “image” of Republicans as “the party of Bible-thumping, anti-gay, anti-abortion creationists.” Setting aside whether that “image” really is “ludicrously inaccurate,” what else is wrong with Murray’s thesis of Asians favoring business and self-reliance?

Thanks to asiangrrlMN’s tweet for tonight’s topic.

What Murray misses, in my experience, is that both Asians and Hispanics are generally more community-oriented – like a majority of Americans overall – and reject the Republicans individualism fetish. At its core, the 2012 election was a debate between “we’re all in this together” (President Obama and Democrats) and “you’re on your own” (Mitt Romney and Republicans). Community won, individualism lost. Charles Murray still doesn’t get it.

Charles Murray is ludicrous even for a right wing pundit. I am speechless. If this is the rebranding of the Republican party I think that they have miles to go. This is much worse than “New Coke” as a rebranding, new and improved product introduction.

Loved the “New Coke” example. Put cheaper syrup in your product, advertise it as new and expect success.

Tell you what……… This is really encouraging to me. They don’t get it, and if we’re lucky, they never will!
