Campus Question – November 9, 2012

Tonight’s question, greetings, and banter here. (More)

On Wednesday, Massey Energy CEO Robert Murray laid off 156 employees after a prayer that blamed the layoffs on President Obama’s reelection. Today a Fox News headline proclaims “Massive Layoffs Across America,” although the Massey Energy firings are the only examples in their story that are directly linked to the election, and a Twitter user urged businesses to fire Obama voters and not contract or hire Obama supporters. Is firing workers based on how they vote, or election outcomes, a sensible business strategy?

Color me crazy, but I don’t see how firing employees because President Obama won Tuesday makes business sense, and firing workers whom a business owner suspects voted for President Obama is probably illegal. The talk about firing employees and closing businesses because “America turned to socialism” is, with the exception of Massey Energy, just talk. But Murray went beyond talk. He put 156 people out of work … in a fit of political pique. That’s reprehensible.

In other news, the Supreme Court today agreed to review the enforcement provision of the Voting Rights Act, and the tea leaves don’t look good. I’d like to think the Court will recognize and accept the changing face of America. My guess is that at least some of the Court’s conservatives want to strike down the Voting Rights Act … and return the electorate to what Bill O’Reilly called “traditional America.”

Reducing your work force when business conditions change so that your operation will not make a profit makes sense. If you own a coal mine that has been depleted of coal, you decrease the work force. Murray is making a political issue from pore business practice. He was probably hopping for a change in the business climate like elimination of mine inspectors. With the Obama reelection he is now acting on reality.

If the business is in a right to work state, I’m guessing he can fire them for any reason he wants to. Massey is making a great case for the protections offered by a union. As for the business strategy part, as long as he thinks he has an adequate supply of really angry white men I suppose he doesn’t give a sh*t.

What will happen when all his employees buy left over Romney Ryan bumper stickers on ebay? Just a thought. All he is creating or reinforcing is a culture of fear that most sane people will leave as soon as possible.

I truly feel for the people who lost their jobs today. I wish I was in a position to offer them employment.

Last thought. The republicans are trying to reset their image and broaden their appeal. This guy did NOT get the memo.
