Campus Question – April 24, 2012

Tonight’s question, greetings, and social banter here. (More)

Tonight’s Campus Question
Both President Obama and Mitt Romney pitched to young voters today. Polls show President Obama leads among those voters by a wide margin, but also show those voters aren’t as excited about this election as they were in 2008. Will young voters be a key part of the president’s coalition for 2012?

It was good to see President Obama address young voters today, not by focusing on what Mitt Romney has or hasn’t said, but on the downright cruel comments of North Carolina Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R), who said she had no sympathy for students with student loan debts. I hope the president continues to hold Romney accountable for every bizarre thing any Republican has said … as Ms. Crissie suggested a few weeks ago.

I believe young voters will be an important part of the coalition. I’m sorry they aren’t as excited this time, but that has to do with the fact that Obama is now both familiar and president. I think, however, that young voters will be moved to vote, less enthusiastic or not, because of the culture wars ignited by the Republicans, and the threat of higher student loan interest rates. For many young women, especially, I think this is the first time they ever imagined that something like birth control could come under attack.

The campuses around Minnesota have just started rallies and organizing. They have picked students leaders to groom over the summer. I’m guessing by August or whenever colleges start there will be lots of excitement.

I think if the jobs improve that will help more than anything else. It’s got to be tough to come out of school with debt and not find a job that can allow you to start paying it off.

PS Sorry I’m late but doing the roof of my camper took a lot longer than I expected. Plus I needed an aspirin and a shower.

I hope to be picked for some of that grooming. Been a bit shabby lately… πŸ˜‰

  • I don’t think they’re going to be as “excited” as in 2008, but 2008 was a completely different year, where history was in the making. I do, however, think they’re going to turn out in much bigger numbers than some pundits may expect.
