Campus Chatter – January 29, 2012

Today in history, greetings, and social banter here. (More)

Stamford Raffles landed in Singapore today (1819). Also, President Andrew Jackson used federal troops to suppress a labor dispute (1834), Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” was published in the New York Evening Mirror (1835), Queen Victoria established the Victoria Cross (1856), Karl Benz patented the gasoline-powered automobile (1886), the American Legion was founded (1900), Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner became the Baseball Hall of Fame’s first inductees (1936), and Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Curly Lambeau and 14 others became the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first inductees (1963). And President Jacques Chirac announced the “definitive end” of French nuclear testing (1996).

Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    Wow, I guess everyone is busy preparing for today’s Pro Bowl…. ;-)

    Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    I overslept. Again, unusual, but welcome since I had trouble falling asleep last night. We’re in the 40s again this morning, but our days are warming up nicely. If you all were really cold up north, I’d tell you to come on down.

    Got another wall painted. Now we’re looking at the most awful job of all, a wall that runs the entire length of our house and has five wide sliding glass doors which are covered by wood blinds. I think I’m going to argue that we’d better not take the blinds down. They’re awfully heavy and even the guys who installed them were worried about that. And I’ve figured out a work-around… I’m just so brilliant. ;)

    Hugggs and good morning!

    • NCrissieB

      Sounds like you’re making good progress on the painting. As for this …

      And I’ve figured out a work-around… I’m just so brilliant. ;)

      … that’s always a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • winterbanyan

        A feeling so rarely enjoyed. :) I admit it. But I’ve been worrying it since we started this task so I’m glad to have figured out a way not to take those blinds down. Relieved, in fact.

        • Gardener

          Does this involve blasting?

          I think I’d like that! ;-)

      A work around sounds brilliant indeed! When the pros worry about something, I take their advice.

    Morning, everybody. Iriti and I did take that walk yesterday, and she kicked my butt. We ended up walking a bit over 14 miles – and my hip started acting up around mile 6. Heating pad on my hip and thigh is the order of the day.

    She is in fantastic shape – me, not so much. Oh, well…

    • NCrissieB

      Congrats to iriti on being in such good shape, and I’m sure you’ll get back in shape quickly if you keep walking. :)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • trs

        Once I get healed up from this, it’s back to 3-5 miles daily. I was in good shape until I got laid off – construction will do that – but I need to get back into shape. This winter has been mild enough (so far) that I really have no excuse.

        • addisnana

          I would think that a recent surgery might be a good excuse but good luck with getting moving again. :smile:

    • winterbanyan

      What is wrong with your hip, Norbrook? Mine is aching in sympathy. Did you injure it at one time, or has this always been a problem?

      I’m so glad you got to go on that walk in such a beautiful area. :)

      • trs

        I’ve had problems with this hip on and off for a decade or so. I suspect it has to do with either spending the last 35 years doing construction of one type or another – either on houses or on sets – or my misspent youth playing sports I was too small to play (football, basketball) or played all out (baseball, soccer, hockey).

        • winterbanyan

          An athletic youth has a way of coming back to haunt us…as do the kinds of things we did without much thinking about them when we were younger. ;)

          I hope you feel better soon!

    Good morning, everybody. I slept in way too long and it may take two cups of coffee to get me rolling.

    The weather here, specifically a warm and relatively snowless winter is messing up the St. Paul Winter Carnival. No snow sculptures and some ice fishing cancelled. The loppet, a cross country ski event, has been moved and snow hauled in for a shortened course.
    Weird just begins to describe it.

    • NCrissieB

      Everyone seems to have slept late this morning. So you’re right on time! :)

      That winter weather is very strange. Do they expect it to change over the rest of the winter?

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • addisnana

        They have wisely stopped predicting the rest of the winter. They have talked a lot about the jet stream not bringing us snow that anyone who watches the local weather could probably easily draw it on a map.

        Last night they pointed out that winter was about half over and we’d have to see what the second half brought.

    Good rimey morning!

    Frosty hugggs if’n you want ‘em! Clear blue sky and 32 degrees. Supposed to see 45 today, and one WX outfit said 60 for tomorrow, woo-hoo! Been working on the coldframe now and again. Have only about a third of it under plastic, shooting to shelter the rest of it too. Have built a new main door. Now need a vent panel, then it’ll be a matter of installing both and nailing down the plastic sheeting……..

    Worked on more tractor maintenance yesterday. Whew, there’s a lot to keep a machine running! Changed oil and filter, 2 hydraulic filters, cleaned engine, blew out air cleaner, checked fluid levels, took out battery, cleaned, topped off, re-charging now. Still need to grease, but then should be about done…… Glad there’s only 2 of those critters!

    Hope all is well with all of you. Hey t, yer not as young as you used to be! Downton Abbey on PBS tonight……..

    Best, G

    • trs

      G, I was never as young as I used to be…

      That being said, for the most part I’d rather be the age I am now – and I definitely would rather be where I am now.

    • NCrissieB

      Is the coldframe kind of a greenhouse, Gardener? I’m trying to visualize it. :)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    • addisnana

      Thanks for your promos for Downton Abbey. I started watching the earlier episodes on my computer. I can see why you liked it so much.

    A very late good morning, everyone! While a lot of you think you slept in late, I really did. I woke up with Mr. W, which meant he didn’t have any coffee right away, which turns him into a grumpy, if lovable, bear until he gets some.

    So that, followed by breakfast, gets me here really late. I’m glad that iriti can walk so far, she might even become my inspiration. I hope that your hip gets better soon, trs.

    It’s supposed to be cool here today, but then we have a nice warm-up for a few days, and may even see the snow on the ground disappear, especially if it rains mid-week. I hope so.

    Now, it’s off to catch up with Morning Feature and Furthermore!
