Campus Chatter – February 5, 2011

Today in history, greetings, and social banter here. (More)

Roger Williams emigrated to Boston today (1631). Also, the Hermitage Museum opened (1852), Mexico adopted her Constitution (1917), Congress passed the anti-Asian Immigration Act (1917), and President Franklin Roosevelt proposed to enlarge the Supreme Court (1937). And Byron De La Beckwith was convicted of the 1963 murder of Medgar Evers (1994).

Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    21 degrees in North Central Blogistan, feels like 21 degrees. People in these parts seem consumed by the Superb Owl athletic contest (h/t DBunn).

    Programming Note:
    Evening Focus Silly Saturday debuts at 9pm Eastern tonight (Saturday, you know)

    We are still looking for volunteers to write Evening Focus next week.

    • winterbanyan

      And let me add a reminder to check out HurrikanEagle’s Evening Focus last night. A quite illuminating piece. :)

    • winterbanyan

      Really looking forward to Silly Saturday, Jan. I need it. I need it!

      Hugggs and good morning :)

    Republicans don’t like Barack Obama :shock:

    • LI Mike

      Who would have thought that Republicans could hate a president more than they hated Bill Clinton. Add race to the mix and voila. Rotten bums, I say!

      • J Brunner fan

        Yup Mike couldn’t agree with you more: a black man was elected and them bums didn’t have anything to do with it.

        LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!: LOL :!:

      • NCrissieB

        Now that’s not fair, Mike. They’d say it’s because he’s a Muslim socialist from Kenya and has nothing at all to do with his skin color…. ;-)

        Good morning! ::hugggggs::

        • J Brunner fan

          President Obama made the impossible possible and expanded the talent pool. The R’s just couldn’t persuade or bully Colin Powell to do it.
          So they punish him using evil W. as the weapon.

        • LI Mike

          At least, Crissie, Barack Obama has not killed a good friend like the Clintons killed Vince Foster.

    • NCrissieB

      I’m shocked, shocked I say. Now where are my winnings…. ;-)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • J Brunner fan

        I knew that some people my fellow Americans would lose their minds….Obama derangement disease/syndrome started early.

        The crap storm may not be worth it, but it is awesome, everyday that the I can say President Barack Hussein Obama.

  3. JanF

    That the conviction of the murderer of Medgar Evers took 31 years is a permanent stain on America. There was, quite literally, one type of justice when you killed a black man and another type of justice for all other crimes.

    • J Brunner fan

      Yes, that man got to have dinner with his family and sleep in his bed every night. Justice delayed ain’t no kinda justice.

      I’ll stop now before I start with a primal scream that will frighten. :evil: :twisted:

    • winterbanyan

      That we ever got there owes in part to a reporter who risked his life and refused to be put off the story by his paper. We need more reporters like Jerry Mitchell.

    • HurrikanEagle

      Unfortunately that isn’t the only one in MIssissippi. 2005 was the conviction of one of the people and believed mastermind between the 1964 triple murder on fathers day that was immortalized in the movie Mississippi Burning

      As Winter says below, we owe a LOT to Jerry Mitchell and his investigative reporting on the issue.

  4. J Brunner fan

    Morning all,
    Sun shone yesterday, all day. No clouds at all. More snow coming today.
    FYI: Stephen Colbert finally got to the KKKasich MLK/St Pat’s day story.

    Isn’t it great how comedians can do some serious radical Republican bashing and be funny?

    Hope everyone has a good day and a mighty fist bump to you all.

    Edit: Is this the right video JBF?

    • J Brunner fan

      Yup. wasn’t sure whether it was the embed code or the share code so gave you both?

      Thanks :cool: :smile:

      • JanF

        Actually, I wasn’t sure what you gave me either! ;-)

        So I went to the web site and found the video in the Video Clips link. That is why I needed to ask.

        • J Brunner fan

          Oops sorry. Glad you found it.
          Sigh :?:

          • JanF

            No problem. One of my “jobs” is to review Comedy Central videos to select the most awesomest ones (or at least ones that will do in a pinch) for the HEMMED In on Saturdays.

            I had a hard time this week because Jon Stewart insisted on continuing to mock the woman who pointed to herself in the SOTU and while that video was particularly hilarious, I could not get past his meanness. There is enough meanness in the world … I don’t have to bring it here.

            • winterbanyan

              Agree, Jan. His mocking of that woman was taseless in the extreme, and Stewart really lost his footing with this.

            • theKgirls

              I’ve missed all of this– why was a woman pointing to herself during the SOTU and why was that funny?

              • NCrissieB

                She’s a 55-year-old woman who went back to college and hopes that will set an example for her daughter. President Obama was impressed by her story, and complimented her in his State of the Union Address. He also invited her to Washington and got her a seat in the First Lady’s box, so she could watch the address live.

                When he got to her story and mentioned her name, she broke out in a smile, turned to the woman next to her, tapped her chest, and whispered “That’s me.” It was a very human response by someone who is clearly not used to being the center of attention.

                The cameras caught it, and Jon Stewart looped it again and again as President Obama named other people in his speech, as if she were claiming to be all of them. I don’t mind when Stewart pokes fun at famous people; most of their egos need a few holes poked in them. But poking fun at that woman struck me and some others as petty and mean.

                Good morning! ::hugggggs::

                • theKgirls

                  I heard that Pres Obama say that, and I actually used that as a motivator for K1 who is sorely tempted to drop out of school if it gives her an extra hour on her iPhone… I wasn’t watching the screen, so I missed the woman pointing to herself.

                  Jon Stewart is better than that. I’m all for him being merciless on Michele Bachmann, et al, but that is cruel to make fun of this woman. I was proud for her and I already used her as an example of extra effort and wanting something so badly that she’ll sacrifice everything to get there. I was glad Pres Obama brought her to the SOTU. A thrill of a lifetime was marred so Jon Stewart could get a laugh? Sad, I though better of him.

                • sjterrid

                  I was really upset by this too. When I saw the SOTU and saw that, I thought that was a great reaction
                  to having your name called out by the President. I didn’t find it funny the first time. That he continued to use it every night, you’re right is really petty and mean.

                  • JanF

                    I am with you. The first time you could consider it an honest mistep “gosh I thought that would be funny and it wasn’t”. To continue repeating it was cruel. He must not have any people with human hearts on his staff willing to tell him that it wasn’t funny.

    • NCrissieB

      Oh my, JBF. Colbert was spot-on:

      These days, when it comes to jobs, if you live in Ohio … you need not apply.

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • J Brunner fan

        Of course this will continue the flight from Ohio…..

  5. glendaw271

    Good morning. Can’t stick around too long this morning, as I volunteered to help with the State High School Large Group Speech Contest today. I’m going to be able to see a lot of group improv from SE Iowa today.

    It’s a much warmer 17 degrees here this morning. I hope to enjoy today’s warmth, as next week the highs are forecast to be in the single digits all week. Remind me again why I moved from Florida back to Iowa???

    • LI Mike

      Yah got me, Glenda.
      Signed, Mike from Fla

    • J Brunner fan

      Good luck to your team and have fun, Glenda

    • NCrissieB

      You moved to Iowa because you like popsicles and you wanted to lower your carbon footprint by making them outdoors in the wintertime. Alas, it didn’t work because then you still have to keep them in the freezer until summer, which is when you want to eat them. But it seemed like a good idea at the time.

      Next question? ;-)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • glendaw271

        Ah, that’s right! Thanks for that reminder! :lol:

  6. LI Mike

    I have a good one for the debut of silly saturday.

    • JanF

      I’m all ears

      Dog Whistle

      • NCrissieB

        That was sneeeeeeaky! ::wiping off screen::

        Good morning! ::hugggggs::

  7. glendaw271

    I know it’s non-cynical Saturday, but I have a rant against what’s going on in some parts of this country.

    We’ve been reading about the US Congressional effort of forced births. In that tradition:

    Hey, for even more of an “assault” against women, and rape “victims” in particular, did you see the story about the Georgia politician who has proposed redefining Georgia law so that women who’ve “claimed” to be raped, stalked or a victim of domestic violence can’t be called “victims” until the “accused” is actually convicted? Until that time, they would be called “accusers”.

    Because, you know, us women don’t really know when we’ve been attacked or victimized or anything.

    • J Brunner fan

      Yes, I have a problem with this. It reminds me of a movie that I saw about women being forced to have children.

      Will look it up…..

    • NCrissieB

      Uggh. Just uggh. There’s a whole lotta White Men vs. Everyone Else legislating going on right now. ::sigh::

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    • JanF

      I had to wait to comment on this because my blood was boiling.

      I suppose when someone is raped and murdered they will need to be referred to as the “accusing corpse” and that any DNA evidence taken at the scene would be “accusatory semen” until the “accused semen donor” was convicted.

      • winterbanyan

        Lower thyself to a simmer, if thou canst. Okay, boil. I am. However, never will we hear of the accusing corpse, because once we become corpses we become mere “evidence.”

        Except the forensics people who, according to my sister-in-law, can never quite make that objective leap. To them we remain victims. Thank God.

  8. LI Mike

    Well, wish me luck.

    Heading to Jupiter, Fla today to visit ms li mike’s sister and her husband. The sister is a republican and the husband more so. We see each other infrequently, but hubby always has a dig against Democrats. I’ve promosed ms li mike that for sake of family harmony, I’d take the high road. At least hubby and I have interest in sports, so I hope its all super bowl all the time today.

    • NCrissieB

      Good luck, Mike. And remember, if you’re on the high road and someone else is on the low road, stuff flows downhill. Or something…. ;-)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    • J Brunner fan

      Thinking good thoughts for you Mike!

  9. winterbanyan

    Good morning, Blogistan. I’m late. Appalling. One must never be late to class. I’ve got a great excuse for the faculty, but will they believe me?

    Hope you all are doing well. I promise to read and reply as I can, but being late not only made me miss class, it put me in front of the 8-ball… and that ball is rolling downhill. Hmm

    Hugggs to everyone!

    • NCrissieB

      As long as you’re in front of the 8-ball, you’re okay, winterbanyan. It’s when you get behind the 8-ball that you run into problems, although billiard historians can’t agree on exactly why that’s a problem. Or maybe they’re trying to snooker us…. ;-)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • winterbanyan

        Hey, I ain’t talkin’ about no snooker. I’m talking about that magic eight-ball, the one that tells your future, and it’s racing down the slope after me flashing over and over again: You’re late and in trouble.

        Huggs!

  10. LI Mike

    I think I’ve used up my late minute quota, Winter. Thanks for talking the heat off me today.

    • winterbanyan

      Lol, Mike. My main problem is that, as always when I’m late to class, I’m having trouble catching up. ;)

      Hope your trip to Jupiter goes well. If not, hit the beach. It’s really quite beautiful in that area.

  11. JanF

    This is nice to hear:

    In an attempt to keep a clean sheen on its 2012 convention, President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign will refuse contributions from corporations, political action committees and federally-registered lobbyists offering to help pay for the event, according to a Democratic spokesman.

    An official with the Democratic National Committee told reporters on Friday afternoon that as they gear up for the extravaganza in Charlotte, N.C., they will also be capping total contributions to the convention coffers.

    We don’t need to spend mega-millions on the nominating convention when the people who we are expecting to vote Democratic are literally hanging on by their fingernails. And to take money from corporate interests and lobbyists? Bad optics.

    • NCrissieB

      That is good news, Jan. Thank you for sharing it. :smile:

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    • winterbanyan

      Good news except for what it’s doing to my inbox. ;) Pleas arrive in the dozens daily, for the DCCC, the DSCC, and the Obama campaign.

      Already? It seems like only yesterday we put the man in office…

      • theKgirls

        I signed several online petitions during the healthcare debate and I’ve been missing actual emails ever since – real stuff just gets buried among the avalanche of begging for money. I think I’m going to set up a new email, theKgirlsGetPolitical or something and sign petitions to my hearts content — and make a few contributions to any organization that supports PROGRESSIVE candidates.

        P.S. — It not “already” begging, it’s “always” begging

        • winterbanyan

          LOL, Kgirls. You got that right. And the idea of a different mailbox is a good one. I tried to confine all that to my Yahoo account, then slipped up.

          These e-mail addresses get shared far and wide. Everyone on the planet seems to want a signature or a donation.

        • HurrikanEagle

          I finally had to start taking my name off these mass e-mailers. I couldn’t take the massive amounts of spam when my work, school and personal e-mails all go to the same place.

  12. theKgirls

    Good morning – I have a little time to join in because I have the morning off! Well, the morning off where I had to take the kids down to breakfast and make sure K2 ate properly, run back to the hotel room to get K2’s meds and while there grabbed MrKgirls’s travel mug, give K2 her meds, get her to eat what she was supposed to eat while I was upstairs, then take her back upstairs to put on a warmer outfit for ski lessons. But other than that, I’ve been able to just relax. Hah!

    Good morning all!

    • JanF

      Wow. For a morning off that sounded busy. ;-) Living in a hotel may sound glamorous but it is really a pain in the rear. I did that for about 3 months on a computer project. You are really at the mercy of others.

    • winterbanyan

      Great to see you, Kgirls, but sorry the morning began with “hectic.” Hope you get more than a short time to relax before they come back from the slopes.

      Hugggs, I’ve missed you!

    • NCrissieB

      So glad you’ve been able to just relax, theKgirls. About the same way at least one player in tomorrow’s Superb Owl competition is sure to say the team needs to “just relax and play our game.” By “giving it 110%,” of course. Like you did.

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • JanF

        Packer’s coach Mike McCarthy on the big game (paraphrasing): We are not looking at this as The Super Bowl … we are simply preparing to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in a football game.

        Yeah, right.

        • NCrissieB

          Whew! If McCarthy and the Packers were preparing to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in a hopscotch contest, they would have looked really silly…. ;-)

          Good morning! ::hugggggs::

  13. Hoghead99

    Good morning Krew! Mom would say it’s, “….snowing to beat the band.” Twenty two and hoo boy, look at it come down! Was just starting when I arrived home, a bit after 1AM. TV weather radar shows it moving off pretty soon, so maybe a quick foray with the trusty John Deere in the cards for a bit later….

    Hope all well today. I can only echo the comment of theKgirls regarding hotels, I hope they are staying in a nicer place than what the RR provides. Still, the continuing campaign by the housekeepers vs. the day sleepers is, in my experience, wide-spread and nearly universal.

    Best, Hoghead99

    • NCrissieB

      BTW, the band texted this: “Ouch. Stop beating us. Thx.” ;-)

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

      • theKgirls

        Aaaaauuuuggghhhhh – fat fingers on my iPad!! I was TRYING to click the thumbs up and apparently gave you a hide rating!!!! It won’t come off. I didn’t mean it, I swear!

  14. theKgirls

    K2’s class is doing a lesson plan called Bridges where they talk to senior citizens to learn about what life was like back when… But the deeper lesson is on aging and how we view it in our society and the even deeper lesson is on discrimination.

    Yesterday, K2 had an assignment where she needed to look up the definitions of prejudice, stereotype, and discrimination. I was wondering what she knew about the subject so far, so I pointed to the first word (prejudice) and asked if she knew what it meant. “I think so. Does it meaning getting everything ready, like oranges?”

    No, not really, sweetie. Wait, what? Oranges? What?

    K2 looked at me like I was stupid, but she’d forgive it just this once and said in a very authoritative and irritated voice “PRE juice. You know, BEFORE juicing.” Oh, right. How stupid of me.

    • winterbanyan

      That’s adorable! Thanks for sharing it. :D

    • NCrissieB

      Oh my. I’m glad I kept the squeegee handy…. :lol:

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

  15. JanF

    Dammit all to hell:

    In one of his first interviews since being sworn in, Grimm brushed off the suggestion that he was being hypocritical for accepting government-provided health insurance while calling for the repeal of Pres. Obama’s health care reform.

    “What am I, not supposed to have health care?” Grimm told the New York Daily News (the article hasn’t appeared online, only in print). “It’s practicality. I’m not going to become a burden for the state because I don’t have health care and, God forbid I get into an accident and I can’t afford the operation…That can happen to anyone.

    During his race against Rep. Michael McMahon (D-N.Y.), Grimm signed a pledge calling for the repeal of health care reform and made it part of his campaign. “

    No sh*t Sherlock. That’s why we wanted health care reform!! Grrr.

    • NCrissieB

      Definitely in the “Might the absence of fecal matter be a clue, Mr. Holmes?” category…. ;-)

      ::sigh::

      Good morning! ::hugggggs::

    • winterbanyan

      You do not want to know the words that slipped out of my mouth after I read this self-rationalizing piece of dreck.

      Family site and all.

      • HurrikanEagle

        When I read it, it was his name going inbetween all 7 of George Carlin’s dirty words.

        Sometimes I wonder if they even realize the stuff they say when they say it.

  16. DWG

    Arizona wants to secede from the United States. Well, actually, they want to create a committee to decide which federal laws, regulations, and executive orders they will agree to abide by. (Sorry for all caps. It is in original bill and it would make my head explode to try and retype it.)

    THE COMMITTEE SHALL RECOMMEND, PROPOSE AND CALL FOR A VOTE BY SIMPLE MAJORITY TO NULLIFY IN ITS ENTIRETY A SPECIFIC FEDERAL LAW OR REGULATION THAT IS OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF THE POWERS DELEGATED BY THE PEOPLE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. THE COMMITTEE SHALL MAKE ITS RECOMMENDATION WITHIN THIRTY DAYS AFTER RECEIVING THE FEDERAL LEGISLATION FOR CONSIDERATION AND PROCESS.

    THE COMMITTEE MAY REVIEW ALL EXISTING FEDERAL STATUTES, MANDATES AND EXECUTIVE ORDERS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING THEIR CONSTITUTIONALITY. THE COMMITTEE MAY RECOMMEND FOR NULLIFICATION EXISTING FEDERAL STATUTES, MANDATES AND EXECUTIVE ORDERS ENACTED BEFORE THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION.

    Of course, Russell Pearce, the racist behind SB1070, is a big part of this bill as well.

    • JanF

      I thought I saw somewhere that Russell Pearce is really the defacto governor. I guess they needed Jan Brewer’s cheerful visage to sell the load of garbage that they have been peddling.

      I wonder how on earth Janet Napolitano ever got elected governor of Arizona. It seems irretrievably backward 2 short years after she left.

  17. DWG

    There must be something in the water. What is scary is all the t-baggers commenting on stories about the bill, claiming to have read the Constitution. Someone should tell them there is difference between reading and comprehension. Apparently, the election of a black man as president was more than their teeny tiny tea brains could tolerate.

    • HurrikanEagle

      Sometimes it would help the people who ‘read’ the Constitution to learn some Supreme Court history as well.

      Secession is Illegal and Unconstitutional

      The Thugs are just making me angry today
